Carnival Becomes Citizen of the Great Barrier Reef

Friday, 2 June 2017. The Cairns Amateurs has become part of the global movement Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef to accelerate its fundraising cause by asking all online ticket purchasers to make a small, $2 donation.

Cairns Amateurs CEO Graham Thornton said he is proud to help do our part with Citizens, in its quest to make a difference in the preservation of Australia’s treasured World Heritage listed icon.

“Cairns Amateurs Carnival is one of the region’s most time-honoured and significant events on the social calendar whose continued success relies very much on the destination’s appeal of which the Reef is a major drawcard,” Mr Thornton said.

In 2016 Cairns Amateurs Carnival unveiled its new destinational branding, Racing on the Great Barrier Reef, with an objective of positioning and profiling across key domestic and international visitor markets.

“For us, this is a great opportunity to do our bit in giving back to a spectacular jewel in the region’s crown that is now in need of greater protection,” Mr Thornton said.

Mr Thornton also said that through Cairns Amateurs involvement he hopes to create a platform that will encourage and inspire others to become a part of the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef movement.

Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef’s CEO, Andy Ridley said “We are delighted to have Cairns Amateurs Carnival as part of our global movement, and thank them for their acknowledgement of the importance of the Reef, and appreciate Cairns Amateurs encouraging Racegoers to donate to the Foundation, and sign up.  All proceeds go towards initiatives for the future of the Reef”.

Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef

Climate change, global warming, rising sea levels and devastating weather effects have impacted on our environment, including the Great Barrier Reef.  Right now, the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef will take your breath away. But be in no doubt that the pressures to its future are real, and immediate.

Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, through a global social purpose movement, will engage and inspire millions of people from all over the world, and empower individuals from every place and all walks of life, to collectively ensure future generations can continue to learn about, protect and enjoy our greatest natural inheritance – the Great Barrier Reef – the planet’s oldest natural wonder of the world – and create a movement that will positively influence change.
