Fashions on the Field icon Angela Menz appointed Cairns Amateurs Carnival Ambassador

National Fashions on the Field (FOTF) icon Angela Menz is set to raise the style stakes of the Far North’s biggest racing and fashion event with her appointment as 2017 Cairns Amateurs Carnival Ambassador.

The renowned milliner and designer is known at race tracks across Australia as the darling of FOTF, and brings to her role in Cairns an incredible sense of style and finesse that saw her crowned winner of the national Myer FOTF event of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Cairns Amateurs Carnival CEO Graham Thornton said he was delighted to announce Ms Menz’s appointment as the public face of this year’s pinnacle social event, taking place between Thursday 31 August and Saturday 2 September.

“We are honoured to have Angela come on board with us as Ambassador for this year’s Cairns Amateurs Carnival,” Mr Thornton said.

“Many racegoers will already know and love Angela’s vibrant persona and outstanding sense of fashion from her previous roles with us, including as a judge for Fashions on the Field.

“As a race fashion blogger and experienced Fashions judge, she has her finger on the pulse of contemporary racing across the nation, and we feel her infectious spirit of fun, creativity, and flamboyant style are an ideal fit for Cairns Amateurs, which at its core is a celebration of the tropical lifestyle,” he said.

Ms Menz’s duties as 2017 Cairns Amateurs Carnival Ambassador include joining the judging panel for FOTF, as well as attending race days and events including the Cairns Central Ladies Fashion High Tea, which this year moves to an exciting new waterfront location on the famed Cairns Esplanade.

A regular at race tracks across Australia and internationally, the Melbourne-based Ms Menz shares her observations via her definitive blog, On Track On Trend.

Honing her critical eye as a competitor in FOTF events nationwide since 2003, Ms Menz was sashed Fashions winner at the 2011 Melbourne Cup Carnival in an ensemble she designed and made herself.

Ms Menz is now a veteran FOTF judge and said Cairns Amateurs has long been a highlight of her annual schedule.

“I’m so thrilled and honoured to be the Cairns Amateurs Ambassador and look forward to another fantastic carnival,” Ms Menz said.

“The Cairns Amateurs Carnival is a highlight of the racing calendar and I thoroughly enjoy the community spirit and excitement when I step out at Cannon Park Racecourse.”

As Fashions judge, Ms Menz said she appreciated contestants who dressed to please themselves, allowing their individuality to shine.

“The ladies and gentlemen of Cairns always put their best fashion foot forward at the track and as a lover of colour I’m always so happy seeing all the stunning outfits come together at Fashions on the Field,” she said.

“Whilst judging Fashions on the Field, I will be looking for attention to detail, outfits that show personality and a great overall look.”

In 2017, QT Fashions on the Field will become a showcase event for Cairns Amateurs, taking place in the main arena for all to witness and enjoy the spectacle of colour and style.

Fellow judges will include Sydney milliner Carole Maher, and Cathryn Meredith of Ladies in Racing Magazine, while milliner Kerrie Stanley will MC the event.

Now in its 59th year, Cairns Amateurs Carnival has set its sights on beating last year’s impressive attendance of 18,000 racegoers with a refreshed and glamorous blend of tropical fun, fashion and racing.

New events in 2017 include the Cairns Amateurs Fishbowl located in the bottom of the two-storey marquee at the top of Cannon Park race track.

Guest inclusions for this ultimate race day experience promise a comfortable trackside view of all the action, on and off the field, in an air-conditioned marquee with glass-panelled walls, live entertainment, pamper parlour and a delicious three-course lunch by Ochre Restaurant and Catering.

Cairns Amateurs Carnival is held between Thursday 31 August and Saturday 2 September 2017 at Cannon Park Race Course, with a number of key events also taking place on the city’s picturesque waterfront.
